Nobody's shown you what registering with DEFRA actually involves. That's the bit we'll do with you.

What changed on 1 October

Since 1 October 2026, permitted receiving sites in England and Wales report every load they accept to DEFRA's Digital Waste Tracking service.

Each report goes in within two working days, counted from the day after the waste arrives.

Paper transfer notes carry on. The digital report sits on top of them, not instead of them.

Scotland and Northern Ireland follow on 1 January 2027. Carriers, brokers and dealers are expected to follow in October 2027, but that date isn't fixed yet.

We'll get you registered with DEFRA.

Free, 20 minutes, no obligation.

Here's what happens. It's a screen share. You bring your permit number and your company details. We go through the DEFRA registration together, step by step. By the end you're registered, or you know exactly what's missing and how to get it. DEFRA charge £26 a year per legal entity for the registration itself. That's their fee, not ours. Whether you use Wastrio after that is up to you.

You stay in control of your own Government Gateway login throughout. We never ask for it and we never take over your screen. You enter your details and you confirm them, we just show you where everything goes.

Have you got your API code yet?

We only use your details to arrange the call. Privacy policy

Worth knowing before you start

Each company registers itself with DEFRA. It's once per legal entity, not once per site, so a group with three companies registers three times.

If you're using software, DEFRA gives you an API code to hand to your software provider.

Got your API code? Plug it in, live in an hour.

Give us the code and you're reporting the same day. The transfer note and the DEFRA report get done together from one record.

Try it for 14 days for £1 ex VAT

On the spreadsheet

DEFRA's spreadsheet is free and it works. It just takes time, every load, every day. If that's fine for your site, stick with it. If someone's spending hours on it, that's the bit Wastrio takes away.

The deadline

Every load you receive has to be reported within two working days, starting the day after it comes in. Weekends and bank holidays don't count. So a load in on Monday is due by the end of Wednesday, and Friday's loads are normally due by the end of Tuesday.
